Dye type: Adjective dye (acts as both a mordant and dye, primarily for plant based fibers)
Shade Range: Produces light buttery yellows, browns and soft greens. The iron mordants convert the colors to lichen greens and grey greens.
Mordant Requirements: Myrobalan can be used as a standalone dye, but its main use is as a plant tannin mordant for plant fibers such as cotton. It is often combined with other mordants to make a light yellow, such as with alum.
Fastness: Among the dyes, myrobalan has good wash fastness and light fastness especially as a tannin pretreatment for other dyes.
Common Uses: This is a natural textile dyeing versatile dye. Overdyed with indigo it also gives rich teals as a base.
