Common name: True Indigo, Indian Indigo

Dye type: Requires reduction and oxygen exposure for color development —a.k.a. it’s vat dye.
Shade Range: The number of dips and air exposure vary the range of shades produced by indigo from a pale sky blue to a deep navy. The vat penetrates the fibers through the dye until it darkens with each dip in the vat.
Mordant Requirements: Its a Vat dye and does not require a mordant. It is done by reduction in a vat and exposed to oxygen for development into the classic blue color.
Fastness: Washfastness is excellent, and lightfastness is moderate on natural fibers such as cotton and silk.
Common Uses: The dye indigo is used in dyeing of textiles, mainly denim, and is also used in traditional arts, crafts and textiles.
